SASE Annual Conference in Light of the Coronavirus Pandemic

Dear SASE members,

The next annual meeting of SASE is scheduled for July 18-20, 2020 in Amsterdam. The coronavirus pandemic forces us to reconsider our plans. Still, because our annual conference is relatively late in the summer, we have some time before we need to decide whether to cancel the conference in Amsterdam and what alternatives – online or otherwise – we adapt instead. The executive council, based on recommendations made by the executive committee, agreed that, for planning purposes, we should announce how to proceed with the SASE Amsterdam conference no later than May 1.

Before we make our decision, we would like to hear from you, SASE community. Once we have better information on online options, we will send you a survey in which we will ask about your preferences in regard to the possibility, scope and structure of an online conference. This is your conference and we would very much appreciate your input. Please be on the lookout for our email in April.

Since we do not yet know the form that our conference will take, we removed the early-bird conference registration deadline and we will reinstall it once we know what the plans are. As you can imagine, changing our plans will have dire financial implications for our association, which depends on membership and conference fees to exist. For the sake of our community, we urge you to pay SASE membership this year independently of the conference.

To renew membership please see instructions here.

For those who have already registered for the conference, once we know for sure what our plan is after May 1, we will let you know about reimbursement and other alternatives.

Thank you very much for your patience as we try to make some difficult decisions in conditions of high uncertainty. We will do everything we can to preserve the academic community we have built for decades. But first and foremost, please keep yourself and everyone else safe

Sincerely,

Nitsan Chorev – on behalf of the Executive Committee
