Richard Higgott

Appointments at Warwick include: Pro Vice Chancellor for Research, Professor of International Political Economy, Foundation Director of the UK ESRC, Centre for the Study of Globalisation), University of Manchester (Professor of Government).

From 2011-2014 he was Vice Chancellor and President of Murdoch University in Western Australia. Earlier professorial appointments include the University of Manchester (professor of Government); the Research School of Pacific and Asian Studies, Australian National University (Professor in International Relations and Public Policy and Director of Studies for the Australian Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade) and sub-professorial career positions at the Kennedy School of Government, Harvard University, Murdoch University and the University of Western Australia.

Funded Visiting Professorships include the Diplomatische Akademie Marie Therese (Vienna), the Institute of Defence and Strategic Studies (Singapore), Chulalongkorn University, (Bangkok), the Stiftung Wissenschaft und Politik, (Berlin), the Hungarian Institute for Advanced Study (Collegium Budapest). In 2003 he was the first holder of ‘la Chaire Asie’ at the Fondation Nationale des Sciences Politiques (Paris).

Other Offices: National Director of the Australian Institute of International Affairs; President of the Australasian Political Science Association; Vice-President of the International Studies Association (USA); Council Member and Principal Policy Adviser to the Royal Institute of International Affairs (Chatham House). He is a Fellow of the Royal Society of Arts, a Fellow of the Academy of the Social Sciences (UK). Recent board appointments include the Academic Council of the United Nations System, the Council for Asia-Europe Cooperation and the UK Department for International Development’s Committee on Economic and Social Research, the governing body of the Association of Commonwealth Universities. He is or has been a member of international supervisory boards of university research institutes in Europe, the USA, Asia and Australia.

Extensive consultancy and policy work includes: the Japanese External Trade Organisation (JETRO), UN Industrial Development Organisation (UNIDO), Global Development Network (World Bank), Deutsche Stiftung fur Entwicklung, British Telecom, Siemens and Shell. From 1986-93 he was a member of the Australian Minister for Trade’s Negotiation Advisory Group (TNAG).

Grant income, as sole or principal investigator is in excess £20 million. Awards include: Fulbright Fellowships, a Canada-Australia Bicentennial Award, Australian Government ‘National Priority Award’, UK Foreign Office Fellowship; the Hallsworth Fellowship; a Canadian Government Cooperative Security Award and major awards from the ESRC (+ £5 million) to set up CSGR and 2 major Framework Awards from the European Union. From 2005-10 he directed the €4.5 million EU Framework 6 Network of Excellence on ‘Globalisation, Governance and Regulation’. In 2010 he led CSGR’s winning €8 million Framework 7 bid for a project on ‘Europe in a Multi-polar World’.

Author or editor of some 20 books, research monographs and edited volumes and 120+ articles/chapters including in journals such as: International Organisation, International Politics, International Affairs, Review of International Studies, Political Science Quarterly, International Political Science Review, International Journal, New Political Economy, Review of International Political Economy, Third World Quarterly, Politique Etrangere, Internationale Politik, Global Governance, Critical Asian Studies, Kokusai Seiji, European Foreign Affairs Record, Journal of European Public Policy, Journal of Modern African Studies, Review of African Political Economy, Japanese Hournal of International Relations, Journal of East Asian Studies, ASEAN Economic Bulletin, Australian Journal of Political Science, Australian Journal of International Affairs, Australian Quarterly, Australian Journal of Politics History.

The International Relations of the Asia Pacific (Vols. I-IV, co-ed with Shaun Breslin) was published in 2010.

Past editor of 2 major peer reviewed journals (Global Governance and the Australian Journal of International Affairs) he is (since 1995) editor and the co-editor of The Pacific Review and is or has been a member of some 12 other international editorial boards including International Studies Quarterly, Review of International Political Economy, European Journal of International Relations.
