Matthew Amengual

Matthew Amengual is an Associate Professor in International Business at the University of Oxford, Saïd Business School
Broadly, he investigates the politics of promoting economic development that is both equitable and sustainable.  His first book, Politicized Enforcement in Argentina: Labor and Environmental Regulation,  published by Cambridge University Press, investigates the politics of enforcement in contexts of weak institutions.  His second book project is on the local politics of mining in Latin America, exploring the varying outcomes of direct contestation between social actors and firms over the employment, contracts, and public goods provision.
In addition, he  studies labor regulation in global supply chains, especially how private, transnational, regulation interacts with states.  Current projects also focus on how sourcing practices of global buyers in the apparel industry are connected to labor standards in their supply chains.
Before joining Oxford, he was an Associate Professor of Work and Organization Studies at MIT Sloan.  He received his AB in environmental studies from Brown University, and his Master’s in city planning and PhD in political science, both from MIT.
