Joonkoo Lee

Joonkoo Lee is an Associate Professor of Organization Studies, School of Business at Hanyang University in Seoul, Republic of Korea. He was a visiting research fellow at Seoul National University Asia Center in 2014-15. Prior to joining Hanyang in 2012, he was a Postdoctoral Research Scholar at the Social Science Research Institute at Duke University. He received his Ph.D. in sociology from Duke University in 2011 and M.A. and B.A. from Seoul National University in 2000 and 1998, respectively. He is an Associate Editor for Competition and Change and an Associate Series Editor of Development Trajectories in Global Value Chains, a book series in Cambridge University Press. He is also an editorial board member for Journal of International Business Policy and New Technology, Work and Employment. His research interests include globalization and development, global and regional value chains, value chain governance, and economic and social upgrading in apparel, electronics and cultural/creative industries, focusing on East Asia. His current research projects involve rising institutional complexity in the global economy led by geopolitical tension, new technologies, and social and environmental regulations and how lead firms and suppliers in global value chains respond to such challenges. He co-edited Knitting Asia, Weaving Development: Globalization of the Korean Apparel Industry (Palgrave-Macmillan, 2023). His work has appeared in journals such as Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences, Industrial and Corporate Change, and Journal of International Business Policy, Journal of Business Ethics, European Planning Studies, and critical perspectives on international business.
