SASE Policy on Public Statements

On the premises of SASE’s Articles of Association and By-laws, which state that:

– SASE “is organized and operated exclusively for charitable and educational purposes” and, among other purposes, for “the advancement of scientific study, scholarship, intellectual exploration and public policy implications of the study of economics (or choice) behavior within the more encompassing psychological, societal, institutional, historical, philosophical, and ethical contexts” (AoA, third);

– “SASE is a multidisciplinary organization, dedicated to developing social science theory, research, education, and practice in the intersections of many disciplines, including sociology, psychology, philosophy, political science, history, anthropology, management, law, and economics” (B-l, article 1)

The Committee recommends that SASE:

– May consider issuing public statements when academic freedom and the autonomy and independence of research institutions and personnel as well as interdisciplinary and international cooperation in the field of research and education are impeded, challenged, or placed at risk;

– The deliberation and decision about whether to take any specific action in this field and the text of such public statements shall be reserved to the Executive Council;

– The Executive Council shall consider issuing a public statement within the above-mentioned scope at the request of at least two members of the Executive Council or if the Executive Council receives a formal request signed by at least 50 SASE voting members;

– The Executive Council may establish an Ad Hoc Committee to discuss the opportunity and content of individual public statements. The Ad Hoc Committee shall include one of the members that proposed the statement (either within the Executive Council or among its voting members) and shall prepare a recommendation for the Executive Council. In cases of urgency, as recognised by the Executive Council, the time allocated to the Ad Hoc Committee should not exceed one month and the Executive Council will hold a special online meeting or ballot, as the Executive Council considers appropriate, to decide about the statement immediately thereafter;

– The Executive Council can establish this procedure without changes in SASE By-laws, since they do not introduce new competences or rights for the Executive Council or voting members. It would represent an internal procedure that should be advertised in the SASE website under the heading “Public statements” or “Public engagement”.

This policy was adopted by the Executive Council at its meeting on July 8, 2025. It can be implemented as described above.
